Despite being a link in a national
chain, this club embodies the carefree and committed
musical spirit of New Orleans.
The
Scene
Folk art is perfectly placed, theater-style
ropes keep admission lines orderly, and efficient
employees prowl the grounds with headsets
or walkie-talkies. HOB proudly hawks its
courtyard and takes a local role by hosting
special events such as benefit concerts.
The
Draw
The top-level talent and customer service
make it hard to resent this chain, which
has eclipsed more homegrown venues. The company's
deep pockets lure an eclectic range of big-name
touring acts, from Ziggy Marley to Frank
Black. The club also hosts several shows
by emerging local bands each month. The dining
room is huge and busy, seating nearly 300.
Service is quick and friendly. HOB has po'boys,
jambalaya and etouffee, but carnivores should
try the slow-smoked baby back ribs with tangy
Jack Daniels barbecue sauce.
